In order to avoid damage to your walls and furniture caused by sliding the hose on the floor, install a hose cover on your central vacuum hose.
An outside air evacuation is generally not neccessary when installing a central vacuum system. Most of todays units have a filtration system which meets the HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air filtration) standards which eliminates at least 99,97 % of dust particles of diameter above or equal to 0,3 microns.
The only exception being homes accredited with the NovoClimat standard which requires an outside air evacuation installed away from any fresh air intake.
Increase the lifespan of your hard surface floor brush by avoiding to rest it on the floor with the wand leaning up against a wall.
By doing this, you will avoid the bristles folding inward which will in turn decrease its efficiency. Store your brush leaning flat upon a hard surface or even better, hang it upside down on the hose rack.
Take the time to change tools depending on the area you are cleaning. There is a wide variety of tools each dedicated to specific tasks.
There are also tools to clean under appliances, hard to reach corners, blinds, carpet covered stairs, etc...
In order to obtain maximum control of your hose, hold the handle with your usual hand, pass the hose behind your back to create a downward loop and hold it with the other hand.
This way, you will be able to manipulate the handle comfortably with one hand and control the hose perfectly with the other.
Empty the dust collecting tub at least twice a year, for example during spring and fall cleaning. A half full tub is always easier to empty and clean than an overflowing tub.
Proper maintenance requires a little bit of discipline but your central vacuum will reward you in the long run.
There is no set rule for the location of a central vacuum unit, what is important is that the unit be installed in a dry, well ventilated area which is not exposed to condensation or humidity.
